How to Encrypt Files and Folders with EFS in Windows 10, 8 or 7
Read about EFS in Windows 10, how to enable and use it, and how to back up the EFS encryption key.
The Encrypting File System (EFS) was first introduced in Windows 2000 and is still available in all versions of Windows 10, 8 or 7 except for Home version. EFS is similar to encryption by Bitlocker, and it allows encrypting separate files and folders while Bitlocker works with the entire disk. EFS is not a full-fledged file system, but an add-on based on NTFS and allowing to encrypt particular files on the fly.
What Should I Do If Files Are Encrypted?
Nowadays, the most harmful program is considered a Trojan or an encrypting virus. Some of these files can be cured, while others cannot. Below, we will write about actions you should take in both cases and also bring you up to date with the tools you can use to protect your data from such viruses.
How to Recover Data From a Disk Encrypted by Bitlocker
Read about the methods you can use to restore access to a disk encrypted with BitLocker, and how to restore data from an encrypted disk which you can no longer access.
Such problem may emerge as a result of damage to the file system of an encrypted disk (for example, damage to the area of the hard disk, where BitLocker stores important data, that happens due to unexpected system shutdown), inability to load OS or BitLocker recovery console, and other similar errors that prevent normal opening of the encrypted disk. The described problems may affect both system disk, portable external drive or USB drive.
and Encrypted NTFS Files
This article describes the process of recovery for files protected, encrypted or compressed with EFS (NTFS), and gives you hints on how to tackle possible problems.
NTFS has a lot of features not even imaginable in the older file system, FAT. Alternative data streams, user access permissions, on-the-fly compression and encryption are just a few things that are obvious to a computer user. Undeleting deleted files as well as recovering corrupted NTFS partitions presents more of a challenge to the designer of a data recovery tool than the older file system. Let’s deal with these issues one by one.
